Renting a storage unit for the first time is simpler than most people expect, but there are a few things worth knowing before you sign a lease. This guide covers everything: how to choose the right unit, what to bring, what you can't store, and how to pack it well.
What You Need to Rent a Storage Unit
Before you can move anything in, you'll need to complete a few quick steps:
A valid photo ID is required at every storage facility. At Bolt Storage, the entire rental process happens online or by phone — no need to visit the office. You sign your lease digitally, and once it's complete, you get immediate access to your unit. Bolt also provides a free lock when you move in, so there's nothing extra to buy before your first trip.
If you prefer to speak with someone, Bolt's customer support team is available 24/7 to walk you through the rental process over the phone.
Choose the Right Unit Size First
The most common first-timer mistake is guessing on size — renting too small and having to upgrade, or paying for space you don't use.
Start by thinking about what you're storing, not how much. A few boxes and seasonal items fit in a 5×5. A dorm room or studio apartment's worth of belongings fits in a 5×10. A one-bedroom apartment with furniture needs a 10×10. Larger homes or shared rentals go up from there.
When in doubt, go one size up. It's cheaper than upgrading mid-rental, and vertical space — which most people underuse — can offset the difference. See our Storage Unit Sizes Guide for real examples by unit size.
Do You Need Climate Control?
For most items, a standard unit is fine. But if you're storing anything sensitive to heat or humidity, climate control is worth the added cost.
Items that do better in a climate-controlled unit: wood furniture, electronics, mattresses, clothing, photos, artwork, instruments, and important documents. Items that don't need it: lawn equipment, tools, plastic bins, seasonal decorations, and most sporting gear.
A climate-controlled unit maintains a consistent temperature year-round — typically 55–85°F — which prevents warping, mold, and moisture damage over time. If you're storing long-term or through a summer, it's usually the right call for anything that matters. Learn more in our guide to climate-controlled self storage.
What You Can't Store
Every storage facility has prohibited items — things that are banned for safety, legal, or insurance reasons. First-timers are sometimes surprised by this list.
You generally cannot store: food or perishables, flammable liquids (gasoline, propane, paint), firearms or ammunition, hazardous chemicals, live plants or animals, or anything illegal. Most facilities also prohibit storing cash, securities, and irreplaceable valuables like jewelry — not because they'll be stolen, but because they're typically excluded from insurance coverage.
If you're unsure whether something is allowed, call ahead or check your rental agreement before move-in day.
Storage Insurance: Don't Skip It
This is the tip most first-timers wish they'd known. Your belongings in storage are not automatically covered — not by the facility, and often not by your existing renters or homeowners insurance (though some policies do extend coverage to off-site storage, so it's worth checking).
Most facilities offer basic insurance plans starting at around $8–$15/month. If you have renters or homeowners insurance, call your provider before move-in to ask whether stored belongings are covered and up to what value. Either way, don't leave your unit uninsured.
How to Pack Your Unit Well
How you load your unit determines how easy — or frustrating — every future trip will be.
Put heavy furniture and appliances at the back and along the walls. Stack lighter boxes on top. Leave a narrow aisle down the center so you can reach the back without unloading everything. Place items you'll need to access often near the front.
Use clear plastic bins when possible — you can see inside without opening them. Label every box, including the date packed and what room it came from. Keep a simple inventory list (a Google Sheet works fine) so you can find things months later without opening every box.
Use vertical space. Most units have 8-foot ceilings and most people only stack 3–4 feet high. Disassemble bed frames, remove table legs, and stand mattresses on their side — you'll be surprised how much extra floor space this frees up.
Understand Your Rental Terms Before You Sign
Storage leases are almost always month-to-month, which is good — no long-term commitment. But there are a few things worth reading before you sign:
Notice period: Most facilities require 10–30 days' notice before you move out. At Bolt Storage, it's 10 days. If you don't give notice, you may be charged for the next month.
Rate increases: Monthly storage rates can go up, typically with 30 days' written notice. It's standard practice in the industry — just something to be aware of.
Late fees: Know the grace period and what the late fee is before your first payment is due.
Access hours: Make sure the facility's access hours match when you'll actually need to get in. Some facilities offer 24-hour access; others have evening cutoffs.

What to Do After You Move In
Once your unit is packed, don't set it and forget it. Every couple of months, it's worth doing a quick check to make sure there are no signs of moisture, pests, or damage — especially after a wet season. Pull a few boxes forward, check the corners, and make sure your lock is secure.
If you have items you no longer need, clearing them out reduces what you're paying to store. Storage is most useful when it's working for you — not just holding things you forgot about.
